The Ninilchik Chamber of Commerce is organizing the first annual Clam Scramble- Mud Run and Natural Obstacle Course in conjunction with the Kenai Peninsula Fair’s Clam Jam Concert. The inaugural Clam Scramble will be on June 20th, 2015 starting at 12:00 noon at Ninilchik’s Deep Creek Recreational Park, following along the foot of the Cook Inlet beach bluff, down to Ninilchik Harbor then up the bluff to finish at the State Park by the Buzz Café above Ninilchik River. “The Clam Scramble will have this great classic Alaskan panorama with fantastic views of the Inlet and the volcanoes serving as a backdrop for what will be an epic summer kickoff celebration.” said Ninilchik Chamber President, Ross Cameron. This sometimes grueling run will take you through two rivers, maneuvering thru a myriad of natural obstacles, taking a dip in the chilly waters of Cook Inlet while racing the tide pushing the limits of your endurance and just when you think you have nothing left to give you reach the Steep Stairway leading you to Ninilchik View State Campground, finally ending in the Buzz Café parking lot. “The river-to-river race course is an ideal place to have a mud run obstacle course because the beach route has some great natural features and man-made obstacles already, including some nice mud flows” said Debbie Cary, Chamber Secretary.
The Ninilchik Chamber Clam Scramble has the good fortune of having two local world-class skiers, Kelli & Todd Boonstra, volunteering as Race Marshal s and race organizers. Their combined experiences participating and organizing races have given the Ninilchik Chamber a strong boost towards making the first annual Clam Scramble a successful fundraising event. “We are excited to be a part of the inaugural Clam Scramble race and hope to help lay the ground work for many Clam Scrambles in the future,” said Todd and Kelli.
The race winners will be declared in four categories and will share a bounty of merchandise, services and cash. Two Individual race categories are open to runners from 13 to 29 years old and 30 to 55. Registration fee will be $25 pre-race day/$30 after June 14th. Seniors from 56 to 101 years old will receive a $5 senior discount on the race fee and the Junior division will be just $15 for 6 to 12 year olds. The Team Division fills out the Clam Scramble lineup and is open to teams with a minimum of 4 members. The Team Division registration fee is $85 pre-race day for teams of four and $15 for each additional runner. Pre-registration can be done online at Ninilchik Chamber of Commerce until June 18th, 2015.
